Chapter Four

Logan had spent the next couple of days doing little but eating and sleeping. Any spare moment in the day, he’d used to listen to Riley talk. He hadn’t cared what the subject had been ― he would have listened to Riley chat about anything, just to hear his voice. Damn, but he’d missed the low, pleasing cadence of it. Logan had expected the two days he’d slept to be enough to satisfy his body’s needs, but he’d had more healing to do it would seem ― a great deal more. The bruises that had marred his skin had finally disappeared, and when he’d woken on the fifth day and headed to the bathroom across the hall, he no longer had a limp.

Logan had also eaten practically his entire body weight in food five times over in the last couple of days, as if trying to make up for all the times he’d gone hungry. He’d likely put on a few pounds already though it would take much longer to regain all the weight that he’d lost. To all intents and purposes, he was as good as new. On the outside at least, his body had fully healed. Inside his mind, well, that was a different story.

Despite falling asleep easily beside his mate each night, Logan hadn’t had the restful sleep that he’d craved. Each night, disturbing, vivid nightmares had taken hold of his mind until he’d woken on a shout, breathing heavily and covered in sweat. It was always the same dream ― Roy in wolf form, chasing Riley through the woods. Each time Logan chased after them, but he was never fast enough. He could never save his mate because he kept getting his paw caught in a damn trap.

He shivered at the unwelcome image.

Logan knew that the bad dreams were likely the result of stress. After all, he’d been through a lot in the last couple of years, but the more he kept having the same dream, the more real it became. It had stopped feeling like a nightmare and had started to seem more like an omen. He’d tried to convince himself that Roy wouldn’t bother looking for him, but what if he did? What if by coming back to Riley, Logan had put him in danger? He’d never forgive himself if Riley came to any harm as a result of his actions.

But the fact of the matter was, if Roy decided to look for Logan, he would turn up at Riley’s door regardless of whether Logan was there or not. The home of a wolf’s mate would be the first place any shifter would look for another. At least now that Logan was there, he had the ability to protect Riley or at least to try.

And he would.

He’d give his life gladly to protect his mate.

“I need to go into town for supplies,” Riley said. “Do you want to tag along for the ride or are you going to stay here?”

Logan turned from his self-appointed sentry position on the front porch then pulled Riley into his arms.
